Monthly College Counseling Update: November 2024

Seniors

In the past cycle’s College Seminar we discussed the different types of decisions that students could receive in the coming weeks and months. We shared advice on healthy responses, both emotionally and strategically. Counselors also discussed the need to be caring and supportive of peers as one student’s good news might not mean the same for another member of the class. The main theme no matter the decision: patience. Early decision and some early action schools will release decisions in the weeks prior to Christmas break. Beyond patience, we informed students that the college counseling office will be available to discuss decisions, evaluate lists, and discuss late application changes during the holidays if necessary. We will have an email out prior to break about reaction to decisions, our defer guide, and communicating with college counselors over the holidays.
Juniors

Admission representatives from University of Maryland, University of Delaware, Ursinus College, College of the Holy Cross, and Haverford College participated in this year’s Junior College Panel before Thanksgiving. Our guests provided wonderful advice and counsel concerning our students’ college search, selection, and application process. Our community also made a very positive impression upon our panelists. Thank you for your attendance, engagement, and showing appreciation. College Counselors started meeting individually with juniors last week. The Junior Introductory Meeting is required, students can sign up during a free-period or after school - https://pickatime.com/archmereacademy/client?event=400151

Junior Parents

We will offer two Junior Parent Nights to educate families on college search process and timeline. The dates are December 17th and January 13th. We highly recommend, because “require” sounds to authoritative, that at least one parent or guardian attend one of these to nights. Prior to break 35 sophomores and juniors participated in an optional Six Lives Exercise from G. Richard Shell's book Springboard: Launching your Personal Search for Success. The exercise asked students to visualize what "success" looks like in their life. Six fictional people in radically different careers and life circumstances were reviewed, each with their own upsides and downsides. Students were then asked to consider their own personal definition of happiness, fulfillment, and a successful life, and how this may impact their future career choices. This program is a great way to start considering what students may be looking for from future lifestyles and career choices. This optional program will be repeated in the spring for first-year and sophomore students.

The College Counseling staff will be visiting Hofstra, High Point, and Drexel universities this month. We will also be coordinating the biannual College Counseling Roundtable meeting at Villanova University, attracting over 80 secondary school, independent, and CBO counselors.
