In the past cycle’s College Seminar we discussed the different types of decisions that students could receive in the coming weeks and months. We shared advice on healthy responses, both emotionally and strategically. Counselors also discussed the need to be caring and supportive of peers as one student’s good news might not mean the same for another member of the class. The main theme no matter the decision: patience. Early decision and some early action schools will release decisions in the weeks prior to Christmas break. Beyond patience, we informed students that the college counseling office will be available to discuss decisions, evaluate lists, and discuss late application changes during the holidays if necessary. We will have an email out prior to break about reaction to decisions, our defer guide, and communicating with college counselors over the holidays.
November 1st is the largest annual application submission deadline nationally and at Archmere. Over 95% of seniors will submit a college application prior to this deadline. College Counseling highly encourages students to submit well before the deadline; however, some students do work right up to the evening of 11/1. Students are recommended to sign into their application portals immediately upon receipt of the information - and continue to do so on a regular basis to review application status.
College Counseling is a-buzz with activity. College admission visitors are coming in daily, seniors are in and out for their family meetings and essay reviews, transcript requests are being processed, letters written, and classes taught. It’s probably the busiest time of year, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
This is a great opportunity to remind all families that the college counseling office is open and staffed the entire summer. Please feel free to continue to reach out with questions via phone or email. If a counselor is going to be out of the office, their out-of-office reply will instruct you who is available.
As we do every year, on May 1st we celebrated our seniors with a slightly different twist. While there was certainly a college theme to the day, we didn’t want to make it all about college decisions because there are some students that are still making their final enrollment decisions due to the FAFSA forced deadline extensions. Some students are still awaiting aid packages and others are still indecisive and taking advantage of the extra decision time.
It’s been a busy spring so far with programs and students. Mrs. Soler coordinated a wonderful Junior Career Day last week as over 20 alumni, parents, and friends of Archmere volunteered their time to talk to the class of 2024 about their careers. This year we added a career exploration track with sessions on exploring careers, interview skills, and learning to network. Huge thank you to Mrs. Soler, our presenters, the set-up crew for their assistance with room coordinating, and faculty volunteers as well!
Application decision releases for seniors are still trickling out as schools have begun to vary their release dates. However, it’s also a great time for the College Counseling Office to start Junior Family Meetings before a big wave of regular decision releases in mid to late March for the Class of 2024. Family Meetings started last week and will hopefully end around Easter break. We encourage students to schedule their meetings in the near future.
January has been a busy month in College Counseling. Seniors have been submitting their final applications and also getting some decisions, juniors started College Seminar Class, and the sophomores have been given access to CIALFO. Below is some information for specific classes.
