Students Participate in Third Annual World Language Showcase

On Saturday, March 29, 2025, Archmere Academy sent 44 French and Spanish students to the state World Language Showcase at the University of Delaware, sponsored by the Delaware Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (DECTFL). The students competed in 6 rounds of competition and used their time in between to learn about Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish speaking cultures through dance, art, sport and media. Spanish teachers Sandra Vieyra and Janna Scheflen (DECTFL Board Member) and French teacher Therese Horning accompanied the students and acted as facilitators and judges in different events. Congresswoman Sarah McBride was the opening speaker for the awards ceremony and spoke about her own language learning experiences and the value of learning another language. 
Archmere students earned 8 first place plaques, which will be hung in the World Languages Department, and in total placed 29 times in different events or levels, earning gold, silver and bronze pins. Archmere won the greatest number of events at the competition.

For French Novice the team of Brianna Gregory ‘28, Marjorie Hu ‘28 and Sophia Silverman ‘28 received 1st place in Escape Room and 2nd place in Storytelling; the team of Riley Horsey ‘28 and Alaina Thomas ‘27 received 3rd place in Storytelling; Marjorie Hu and Alaina Thomas were 1st and 2nd in Culture Presentation and Marjorie Hu was 2nd in Culture Photo Trivia Challenge.

For French Intermediate the team of Ethan Flores ‘26, Iyanna Flores ‘27 and Emily Juarez ‘26 were 1st in both Storytelling and Escape Room; the team of Rachel O’Donnell ‘26, Zoe Thornton ‘26 and Celeste Vail ‘26 were 2nd in Escape Room and 3rd in Storytelling; Ethan Flores was 1st in Culture Presentation and Celeste Vail was 3rd; Emily Juarez was 1st in the Language of Proficiency and 2nd in Culture Photo Trivia Challenge where Sophie Wang ‘27 came in 3rd; Celeste Vail was 3rd in Culture Presentation.

For French Advanced, the team of Jack Chesman ‘25, Shripraba Narayanan ‘25 and Kathryn Pyne ‘25 were 1st in Escape Room and 3rd in Storytelling; Shripraba Narayanan was 3rd in Culture Presentation; and Jack Chesman and Sarah Eastment ‘26 came 2nd and 3rd in the Language of Proficiency event.

For Spanish Novice, the team of Caden-Cole McKinney ‘26, Luke Middleton ‘26, and Brandon Paregian ‘26 came in 3rd for Escape Room and for Spanish Intermediate Escape Room the teams of Colleen Burke ‘27, Tanisha Khandelwel ‘27 and Ninaad Vidwans ‘27 and the team of Ciara Knapp ‘26, Tsion Mideksa ‘26 and Kellyn Williams ‘26 came in 1st and 3rd. For Spanish Intermediate, Ninaad Vidwans won 2nd place in the Language of Proficiency and Tanisha Khandelwel won 3rd place in Culture Presentation.
