Archmere Students Recognized with National Scholastic Art and Writing Medals

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit organization that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, has recognized four Archmere Academy students with National Medals, the top honor in the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12: Sabrina Saggese '24 won a Silver Medal for Art in the Painting category for "Hot Seat", Brianna Yang ’25 won a Gold Medal for her piece "The Veteran" in the Flash Fiction category, Jace Walker ‘25 won a Silver Medal for Art for her piece "FaceTime", and Katelyn Pei ’27 won a Silver Medal for her writing piece "A Shanghai Ballad".

More than 100,000 teens from across the country and Canada entered more than 340,000 works of art and writing to the 2024 Scholastic Awards. Sabrina, Brianna, Jace and Katelyn’s pieces were selected by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts for excellence in originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. Only 2,400 works received a National Medal, which means these four works have been recognized as representative of the top 8% of all national submissions.

Since 1923, the Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country, including ranks of notable alumni, including Tschabalala Self, Stephen King, Kay WalkingStick, Charles White, Joyce Carol Oates, and Andy Warhol - all of whom won Scholastic Awards when they were teens.

National Medalists and their educators are honored with a star-studded ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Recent special guests include Oprah Winfrey, Tim Gunn,Tituss Burgess, Amy Schumer, Kelly Clarkson, Zac Posen, Mayim Bialik, Tschabalala Self, Nick Cannon, Jamie Lee Curtis, Derek Luke, Kinsale Drake, Tina Fey, and Rose Byrne.
