Girls Basketball Competes at Viking Invitational
The Viking Invitational Basketball Tournament took place over the Christmas holiday, with games starting on December 27th and running through December 30th. With five different states represented, the Saint Elizabeth Basketball Center hosted 24 boys and girls teams over the four days. Founded in 2020, the tournament provides a competitive and dynamic basketball event that raises awareness and funds for the Leukemia Research Foundation of Delaware.
The Archmere girls basketball team lost a close match to Oakdale High School (MD) 41-38 in the first round, and then went on to defeat Medgar Evers College Prep (NY) 53-39 the very next day. On December 28th, the team came out strong, with senior Lucy Oliver scoring eight of Archmere’s ten points in the first quarter alone, on the way to a victory that matched their highest point total of the season.
Archmere took control in the second quarter, outscoring Medgar 15-4. A significant portion of Archmere’s offense could be attributed to its commanding rebounding advantage. They had multiple opportunities on many possessions while holding the Lady Cougars to one shot most of the time. Senior Ceci Connolly turned one of her 12 rebounds into a layup as the buzzer sounded to extend the lead to 25-11 at halftime.

Lucy Oliver '24 finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists for the Auks. Ceci Connolly '24, who was a force inside, had 13 points, and Bridget Malloy '26 went for 11 points and 12 rebounds. The Auks will visit Newark Charter on January 4th at 3:45 p.m.
