Phoebe Brinker '20 Places Second at the United States Golf Association Women’s State Team Championship
Archmere sophomore Phoebe Brinker was recently recognized as one of the top 12- to 15-year-old golfers in the world during the 2017 season and named to the ACDS Junior All-Star Team. At the end of September, Phoebe, along with two other golfers from the state of Delaware, Tower Hill sophomore Jennifer Cleary and Charter of Wilmington junior Esther Park, traveled to Santa Fe, New Mexico, to compete in the United States Golf Association Women’s State Team championship. The best place that the state of Delaware has ever accomplished in this tournament was 32nd, back in 1995. This year the Delaware team placed second, with Phoebe also placing second individually.
The News Journal writes, "The trio went to The Club at Las Campanas in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Sept. 26-28 with a goal of placing in the top 22 after two rounds, to make the cut the final day. They wound up far exceeding everyone’s expectations, as Brinker finished second individually and the threesome finished second as a team, just one stroke behind the champions from Tennessee."
Phoebe finished with a 68 for a three-day total of 4-under-par 212, two strokes behind the individual champion from Indiana.
The USGA Women’s State Team is played every two years, and brings together three-player teams from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The two lowest scores from each state in each round count as the team score.
