"Young Auks Start Off Strong:" News Journal Reports

Sept. 20: With seven new starters on offense and eight new starters on defense, coach Jerry Ambrogi was afraid the Archmere football team would get off to a slow start. But a 35-7 victory over Chichester (Pa.) and a 34-0 win over St. Andrew’s isn’t a slow start. The Auks, ranked fourth in Division II, will try to keep it going Saturday when they visit Tatnall (1-1) for a noon start. “I’m not sure where we are yet. The kids are still learning and making mistakes,” Ambrogi said. “But we’ve been lucky enough to have success, and there’s nothing like success to give your kids confidence going forward.”

Archmere has been boosted by the passing of 6-foot-2 junior quarterback Brian Rogers.

“He’s got the best arm of any kid I’ve coached,” said Ambrogi, who is in his 32nd season. “He’s got a great touch on the ball, and he can throw it as far as you need him to throw it.”

Fullback Connor Speidel, running back Jack Malloy and receivers Francis McVey and J.M. Nocket also are playing well, and Conor Furey and Sam Mattern are three-year starters on the offensive and defensive lines.

Tatnall presents a speedy challenge for the Auks with senior quarterback Donovan May and junior running back Joe Cooper, both of whom also star in the secondary.

“They’re dymanic players. Either one can be a game changer on offense, defense or special teams,” Tatnall coach Jody Russell said. “They don’t come off the field.”
