Football Team Opens Season with Win over St. Elizabeth's
On Saturday, September 7 the Archmere football team opened their season with a win on the road. The Auks took on Saint Elizabeth's at Abessinio Stadium, defeating them 39-21. Quarterback John Orsini '26 tells the News Journal of the team this year, "It's great to know you have 8, 9, 10 guys that can do it out there. And we have quite a few more we can rely on, on the sidelines." John completed passes to seven receivers as five different Auks reached the Abessinio Stadium end zone.
The Auks also found success with a diverse running game, featuring handoffs up the middle, jet sweeps and quarterback options. Eleven players registered a carry as Archmere ran 27 times for 167 yards.
Highlights agains St. Elizabeth's include:
Johnny Orsini '26 completed 10 of 14 passes for 123 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed 5 times for 30 yards and a TD.
Ryan Hagenberg '26 had 4 receptions for 55 yards and a TD and a 46 yard INT return for a TD.
Jack Shahan '27 had 2 receptions for 21 yards and a TD.
Christian Wittmeyer '25 had 12 tackles (6 solo) to lead the defense.
Michael Donovan '26 had an interception, a rushing TD and a 2 pt conversion.
Patrick Bellew '25 had an interception.
Wyatt Beekley '28 had 8 tackles, a fumble recovery and a 26 yard touchdown run.
Next up: the team travels to Saint Mark's on Friday night to take on the Spartans for a 7:00pm kickoff.
