Monthly College Counseling Update: March 2024

It’s been a busy spring so far with programs and students. Mrs. Soler coordinated a wonderful Junior Career Day last week as over 20 alumni, parents, and friends of Archmere volunteered their time to talk to the class of 2024 about their careers. This year we added a career exploration track with sessions on exploring careers, interview skills, and learning to network. Huge thank you to Mrs. Soler, our presenters, the set-up crew for their assistance with room coordinating, and faculty volunteers as well!
Other successful recent programs include our Why Engineering? night, an Athletics and Recruitment webinar, and the First-Year/Sophomore Parent Night. At a recent faculty professional development day, we welcomed Matty Steiner from Compass Education Group to discuss to new digital SAT with faculty. It was a very enlightening presentation that initiated several post presentation conversations.

Seniors

The last round of admission decisions are being released Thursday and Friday (March 28th/29th). We recently sent out an email about the final transition to a matriculation decisions. This may or may not include final visits, accepted student days, working wait lists, and comparing financial aid awards. With the glitches of the disastrous new FAFSA form, some of these conversations may be delayed and some schools may move their enrollment deadlines to May 15th and even June 1st. Because of this, we are cautious about finalizing our College Decision Day celebration for May 1 - more information to come. College counselors are available for advisement concerning final decisions and comparing financial offers.

Juniors

More than half of the Class of 2025 have completed their family meetings. We’ve recently opened-up post Easter Break meeting slots for the remaining group of students. We know a lot of families are visiting schools during the holidays - our messages: safe travels, there’s no such thing as a bad visit, reach out to your college counselor during break or upon our return to debrief. As discussed in college seminar, here are some important recommendations about visits: have questions ready, explore the parts of campus that weren’t shown on tour, spend some time in the areas around campus, dare to engage the community in conversation, or at least exercise the muscles of the butt and sit down and observe, show appreciation and send a follow-up email!

Teacher recommendation forms were due back to College Counseling by March 27th and your course registration forms (due May 3rd) require a signature from a student’s college counselor.

First-Year/Sophomores

We had a wonderful group of parents for our First Year/Sophomore Parent Night. Thank you for your attendance and energy. Sophomore students will be receiving an email offering the opportunity for them to have an optional meeting with a member of the college counseling staff in April. Students will decide what they wish to discuss - some possible topics are: course scheduling, getting an early start on the college search, dispelling some myths, testing questions, and any other topic of interest. Optional summer meetings will also be available for all rising sophomore and junior families in June and July - registration will be sent out in early June.

Upcoming Programs

- Early Financial Aid Night - April 18th
- College Decision Day Celebration - May 1st (tentative)
