Archmere Senior Luke Merritt Named Semifinalist for 2025 US Presidential Scholar

The U.S. Secretary of Education announced the selection of Luke Merritt, senior at Archmere Academy, as a Semifinalist for recognition as a 2025 U.S. Presidential Scholar. Luke is being considered, along with hundreds of other home school, public school, and private school students from across the country, to be officially named one of the up to 161 Presidential Scholars.
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars selects honored scholars annually based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership, and demonstrated commitment to high ideals. Of the three million students expected to graduate from high school this year, more than 5,600 candidates qualified for the 2025 awards determined by outstanding performance on the College Board SAT and ACT exams, and through nominations made by Chief State School Officers, other partner recognition organizations or the National YoungArts Foundation’s nationwide YoungArts™ competition.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students. The Scholars represent excellence in education and the promise of greatness in young people. In honoring the U.S. Presidential Scholars, the President of the United States symbolically honors all graduating high school seniors of high potential.

The Presidential Scholars Program is by invitation only, so all high achievers are not guaranteed to be nominated. Although not a scholarship program, the recognition and prestige that comes with being named a Presidential Scholar is reason enough for students to want to be awarded the Presidential medallion. The list of the 2025 Presidential Scholars will be published in May.

Congratulations and best of luck to Luke!
