Andy Zhu '24 Makes History with 4th Straight Tennis Title and Undefeated High School Career
Archmere senior Andy Zhu battled Wilmington Charter's Ryan He, the heat and a heaping of internal pressure to win the boys’ first singles at the DIAA Tennis Championships on May 23rd at St. Andrew's. It was his fourth individual title as he joined one of the rarest clubs in Delaware scholastic sports. The match, though it ended in straight sets, was full of long rallies in much hotter temperatures. Andy is just the second player ever to win four straight boys first singles titles at the DIAA Tennis Tournament.
Delaware Online writes of the pressure Andy was feeling, “I was nervous warming up over there,” the Archmere senior said. “I was tight. My serve wasn’t feeling good today.”
Andy had never faced Ryan He before this season, but when they met on May 23, Andy won, 6-0, 6-2. He finished his high school career with a 61-0 record, joining Wilmington Friends’ Brint Morrow (1989-92) as the only boys player to win four championships and go undefeated since the state moved to its tournament format more than 50 years ago.
Speaking about what the title means to him, Delaware Online quotes Andy as saying, “I’ve been working more than four years to get to this spot. It’s been up and down at some points, but I’m just so glad. This means the world to me...This is probably the biggest accomplishment I’ve done in my life.”
Andy will continue his tennis career at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore in the fall. Congratulations, Andy, on this amazing accomplishment!
