Swim Team Competes at DIAA State Championship Meet

The Archmere Swim Team competed in the DIAA Swimming & Diving Championship Finals on Saturday, February 24, 2024. The State Preliminaries were held during the week, with Finals taking place all day Saturday at the University of Delaware. The State Championship Meet is a qualifying meet, and fourteen team members of the Archmere team competed in the Prelims, at which four members of the boys team and five members of the girls team earned a spot in Finals. Elizabeth Maher ’24, Kendall Hanna '25 and Kathryn Pyne ’25 qualified for individual events for the girls, along with Melissa Doig ’25 and Aoife McGurk ’25 who competed in the relays. Logan Bustard ’25 qualified for individual events at Finals, along with Luca Anerino ’26, Declan McGrath '27 and Quinn McCormick ’25 who qualified for the relays.
The boys swam Wednesday evening and Saturday morning, finishing 15th. Logan Bustard ’25 placed 6th overall in his 50 Freestyle, dropping time to a 21.95. He went on to place 7th in 100 Backstroke, recording another best time at 54.56. The Medley Relay of Luca Anerino ’26, Logan Bustard, ’25 Declan McGrath '27 and Quinn McCormick ’25 placed 11th, while the same foursome placed 13th overall in the 400 Free Relay, dropping over 3 seconds in the final.

The girls swam Thursday and Saturday evenings, finishing 8th overall. The team was led by Elizabeth Maher ’24, who improved her time and placed 3rd in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.75 and 4th overall in the 100 Freestyle, dropping almost two seconds. Kathryn Pyne ’25 also qualified for an individual race, placing 5th in the 100 Breaststroke, along with Kendall Hanna '25, who placed 16th in the 100 Backstroke. The 200 Medley Relay of Kendall Hanna ‘25, Kathryn Pyne ‘25, Aoife McGurk ‘25, and Elizabeth Maher ’24 swam to 3rd place, breaking the 2015 Archmere school record time along the way with a 1:50:58! Kathryn Pyne ‘25, Aoife McGurk ‘25, Melissa Doig '25 and Elizabeth Maher ’24 placed 6th overall in the 200 Free Relay.

In addition, junior Elizabeth Maher received the DIAA Academic Award for her superiority in the classroom for the girls team, and junior Logan Bustard earned the award during the boys meet.
