Alex Weir ’17 Places in World Championship All-Ireland Music Competition

Archmere sophomore Alexander Weir competed at the 2014 Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann (The Music Festival of Ireland) in Sligo Town, Ireland, during the week of August 11 – 17. The largest single festival of Irish Music in the world, the Fleadh can reach attendances of 400,000 over the course of nine eventful days.

Several thousand musicians and dancers took part in 174 different music and dance competition categories this year, and of the 500 first, second and third place winners, only 11 were Americans. Three of those 11 were Alex and his two trio bandmates.

Alex placed (individually) 3rd in fiddle slow airs, and then also placed 3rd in trios. Alex qualified to compete in Ireland by placing 1st in three categories of competition at the Mid-Atlantic Fleadh, which was held in Parsippany, NJ in April.
