Monthly College Counseling Update: April 2024

As we do every year, on May 1st we celebrated our seniors with a slightly different twist. While there was certainly a college theme to the day, we didn’t want to make it all about college decisions because there are some students that are still making their final enrollment decisions due to the FAFSA forced deadline extensions. Some students are still awaiting aid packages and others are still indecisive and taking advantage of the extra decision time.
That said, May 1st was a wonderful community day. Seniors gathered for pictures, physical activity, relaxation and reflection, ice cream, and took the time to show appreciation to those that assisted them in their successes. We had over 300 thank you cards written to faculty, coaches, parents, counselors, and classmates. Our annual senior college t-shirt photo will take place on May 17th, the seniors last school day, in an effort to capture everyone’s accurate future plans.

Class News

Seniors

It’s the homestretch! We are still available for all conversations about decisions and aid. Hoping seniors will complete the matriculation survey and scholarship form to make out records as accurate as possible and make sure the graduation program is also correct. The College Counseling Office will send out final transcripts to the school you enter in the matriculation survey in mid-June when final transcripts are available. There is no need to forward these requests from your schools. We will also upload transcripts to the NCAA Eligibility Center at the same time.

Class of 2024 - you’ve been amazing to work with. Thank you for allowing us to walk along-side of you during your college search journey, it’s been a pleasure to watch you grow and prosper. We appreciate all your contributions to Archmere and wish you the best of luck as you transition to your next community.

Juniors

Course registration forms for the 2024-’25 academic year are due by Friday. Each rising senior needs a signature on their form from their college counselor. Please do not wait until Friday at 2:30 to obtain this signature!

This cycle in College Seminar class, juniors started their Common Applications and registered for Self Reported Academic Report (SRAR) account to be able to make progress on each over the summer. Students also have guides to complete both and we covered common mistakes and pitfalls as well. The College Counseling Office is open all summer to respond to application questions. Sometime in May students and families will receive a checklist of recommended summer actions to stay on track and make the fall application season as smooth as possible.

Sophomores

Approximately a-third of sophomores signed up for optional meetings with college counselors over the past few weeks. Conversations about schedules, testing, colleges, getting an early start, and casual items proved very fruitful. We will once again be offering these next year. Invitations for optional family summer meetings will go out in late May.

Sophomores will also be invited to optional work period career exploration exercises next week. The Six Lives exercise is based upon identifying a self-defined measure of success in work, life, and lifestyle. It’s a great foundational career conversation to have and we hope to see several sophomores in the optional sessions.

Sophomore students and families will also receive a summer checklist of recommended actions to take in preparation for their pending college searches.

First-Year

Students will be invited to the optional career Six Lives exercise sessions next week (see description in sophomore section). Invitations for option summer family meetings with a college counselor will be sent out in late May.
