Softball Opens Season with Close Win over Ursuline

It was a chilly start to the spring season on Tuesday, March 19th at Midway Softball Complex. The Archmere softball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh, then escaped trouble in the bottom of the inning for a 6-5 softball win over Ursuline. The season opener was a thrilling one; the game was a back and forth battle for both teams. The Auks held the lead on four separate occasions, only to see the Raiders come back the first three of those times.
The momentum changed in the third inning. The game was tied, 1-1, when junior Maya Grande made it to home base. Sophomore Meredith Finger then singled, stole two bases and scored on a passed ball. The teams also traded single runs in the fourth before the pitchers delivered two scoreless innings.

In the seventh inning, runs came in from Meredith Finger and senior Ruby Merenda, setting the team up for the win. Junior Cassidy Fanning made a crucial play in the seventh, throwing from right field to second base to ensure a scoreless inning for Ursuline, and for the final out, Meredith Finger, making her first varsity start as a pitcher, struck out the next batter.

Pitcher Meredith Finger scattered five hits and struck out seven for the win. At the plate, she had two hits and two runs scored. Junior Claire McGonigle also had two hits, and she scored a run. Senior catcher Ruby Merenda was dominant at the plate, and scored one run at bat.
